Standard paints or asphalt based materials don't have what it takes to accommodate the constant expansion and contraction of a metal or tin roof. Failure by cracking and peeling is commonplace. Preservation Products' elastomeric coatings will expand and contract with the roof and will stay flexible even in temperatures down to 30 degrees below zero.

  • Installation

To perform effectively, a high performance coating system should be applied in a manner that will provide a continuous film of relatively equal thickness. The most effective way to do this is with multiple coats. In fact, 3 or 4 coats are often used for maximum protection. When polyester reinforcement is used, a minimum of 3 coats will be required.

Because Acrymax is formulated for maximum performance. Since 1979, Acrymax has withstood the test of time in many demanding applications and has proven that superior quality coatings are always the most cost-effective choice. Historic restoration and preservation are but one of the areas that Acrymax has stood out. We are extremely proud that as a result of a comprehensive and exhausting test program recently completed for NASA, an Acrymax coating has been selected for use on the Space Shuttle as a protective coating for insulation on the solid fuel booster rockets. Acrymax was chosen because it far outperformed other coatings from companies around the country. Once again, Acrymax is the proven performance solution.

Polyester reinforcement adds dimensional strength to the membrane created with Acrymax elastomeric coatings. Polyester reinforcement is especially useful at transitions, flashings, for lining built-in gutters, for repairing and sealing leaking seams, and in certain cases over the entire roof area, particularly on smooth asphalt roofs. Our Roof Restoration Systems include two different levels of roof reinforcement.

  • Preparation

On cool weather application days, Acrymax coatings should not be applied when temperatures are below 45°F. Temperatures for 24 hours after application should ideally not fall below 45°F and must stay above freezing. At freezing temperatures, any water left remaining in the coating film can freeze and damage the paint film.

On very hot days, it is advisable to apply Acrymax coatings early in the morning before roof surface temperatures become too hot. This is especially critical when installing Poly-1 with HP-1000, as the tack coat can dry prior to embedding the polyester fabric.

The choice between the Preservation System or the Restoration Systems is dictated by the condition of the roof. In both the Preservation System and the Restoration System Preservation Products coatings are applied to a properly prepared roof surface to provide a weatherproof protective membrane that essentially encapsulates the roof in a seamless sheet of "rubber." The basic differences between the systems are in the amounts of material required, number of coats, and use of reinforcement fabric.

  • The Preservation System is a two-coat system that will protect a roof from the effects of the weather, acid rain and UV light.
  • The Restoration Systems are applied in three or more coats and are specified on roofs that show signs of leaking or minor metal deterioration. Poly-1 Reinforcement Fabric is a high-strength reinforcement that is embedded into the coating system. It is used around critical areas such as flashings, around roof penetrations, to repair damaged areas, and in some cases on the entire roof.

Both systems are appropriate for historic roof restoration, tin roof repair and sustainable roof repair.

Preservation Products are competitively priced high-performance elastomeric coating systems. The old adage that "You get what you pay for" is very true in the paint and coatings industry. Unlike cheap paints where the major component is water, with Preservation Products coatings by Acrymax, you are paying for protection. Acrymax coatings are high solids materials, over 50% by volume. Preservation Products offer the most cost effective coating system available.

Poly-1 is a high-strength polyester fabric that is used to reinforce Preservation Products elastomeric coatings in critical areas such as flashings, transitions, roof penetrations and areas where the roof has deteriorated. In certain situations Poly-1 is used to reinforce the entire roof. The combination of Preservation Products coatings and Poly-1, embedded into the coating, creates a high-strength reinforced membrane in our Roof Restoration Systems.

After assessment of the present condition and the individual requirements of the roof, a Preservation Products guideline specification can be developed, which will include: surface preparation, material selection, quantity of materials, number of coats, and if and where polyester reinforcement will be used. Three general specifications have been developed for metal roofs: the Preservation System, the Restoration System, and the Reinforced Restoration System.

Preservation Products tin roof repair systems are based on the concept that "tin" or terne metal, when properly protected, can provide the base for an extremely durable roofing system. Preservation Products roof restoration systems for tin roofs were tested and proven on historic structures in Cape May, New Jersey and throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Preservation Products offers three roof restoration systems for tin roofs, using proprietary elastomeric coatings

  • HP-1 Fully Reinforced Restoration System: For tin roofs in poor condition.
  • HP-2 Partially Reinforced Restoration System: For tin roofs where some patching of leaks and transitional areas is required.
  • HP-3 Preservation System: For tin roofs in good condition, to extend the life of the roof.

An elastomeric coating is a coating with rubber-like properties that will return to its original dimensions after being stretched or deformed. As the roof or substrate expands and contracts with heat and cold, so will the flexible elastomeric coating, creating a weatherproof layer that won't crack.

Preservation Products elastomeric coatings are engineered using the very latest technology to provide maximum performance. Premium state-of-the-art acrylic resins, top grade pigments, and proprietary additives are compounded to produce high-performance elastomeric coatings. Preservation Products coatings provide a durable, weatherproof membrane that is UV stable and highly resistant to ozone, acid rain, and other airborne contaminants.

Preservation Products has flexible solutions for your roof repair.

To patch these problem areas, use Poly-1 Stitch-Bonded Fabric and HP-1000 Elastomeric Roof Coating. Cut a piece of Poly-1 that will cover an area 3 inches larger than the damaged area. After preparing the area to receive the patch, apply HP-1000 to the area and embed the polyester into the wet coating and immediately apply additional coating to the top of the fabric to saturate completely. After drying, additional coats of Acrymax HP-1000 or HP5000 are applied to create a completely waterproof repair.

AF-315 Acrymax Fibrated Acrylic Flashing Grade can be used as alternative to HP-1000 when embedding Poly-1 over certain problem areas. Also, because of its unique Kevlar ® fibers, AF-315 can in some cases be used as a standalone reinforcement to defects in the roof surface area.

In some situations a new piece of metal should be fastened over the problem area prior to application of HP-1000 and Poly-1 or AF-315.

Roof Restoration Systems by Preservation Products do not require separate flashings. The liquid-applied elastomeric coating is self-flashing, creating an effective weathertight seal.

To flash around a chimney, Poly-1 Fabric is applied with HP-1000 Elastomeric Roof Coating to form a flexible reinforced membrane. Alternatively, AF-315 can be used in place of HP-1000 when applying Poly-1 Fabric. In some cases, AF-315 can also be used as a standalone reinforcement. Not really, although sometimes it seems that way. Preservation Products has proven that its proprietary elastomeric coatings are highly effective in a diverse range of applications, from historic roof restoration to the booster rockets of the Space Shuttle. However, proper specification and application is critical to its success. Preservation Products is proud of its customer service and is here to help you.

  • Preparation

Proper surface preparation is one of the key ingredients to successful application of Acrymax coatings. All dirt, oils, or other foreign materials that will interfere with the adhesion must be removed. Power washing, when practical, is the recommended and most effective method for cleaning a roof surface. If power washing is not possible, a stiff brooming with water is also effective. TSP (available at local hardware stores) is effective for preparing painted surfaces when used as per their instructions. Other more environmentally responsible cleansers can also be used. If any chemical cleansers are used, thoroughly rinse the surface before Acrymax application.

Material needs will depend on the condition of the roof and how often you intend on recoating it. On tin roofs that are in relatively good condition, two coats applied at 100-150 square feet per gallon, per coat, will provide 5-10 or more years of protection. If your roof is leaking or has developed pinholes in the metal then additional material will be required. Our technical service staff will work with you to help calculate material requirements for your particular project based on information about your project that you provide; contact us.

The dry time for Acrymax roof and wall coatings depends greatly on a number of factors, including temperature, humidity, direct sunlight, coating thickness, and air movement. Darker colors will dry faster than lighter colors. Allow a minimum of 2 hours between coats.

During cooler weather applications, applicators must take note of not only the ambient temperature but also the dew point. If dew forms on the roof surface the coating will not dry.

It is the responsibility of the applicator to determine if conditions are appropriate for application of Acrymax coatings. Contact us for personalized technical support.

Preservation Products' coating systems from Acrymax have been proven to retain their physical properties, including flexibility, for over 17 years in actual exposures. The elastomeric coating system basically chalks or "erodes" at a slow rate over time.

Because it retains its basic physical properties, maintenance recoats will extend the life of the system indefinitely. We suggest that a Preservation Products elastomeric membrane system be recoated with one layer of Acrymax coating after 5-10 years, based on the particular needs of the project.

The area to be coated should be thoroughly powerwashed to remove salt deposits and loose rust. Commercially available cleaners designed to remove soluble salts may be recommended on certain projects. All remaining loose rust must be removed by wire brushing or other suitable methods. It is important to note that more complete rust removal will result in better performance of the coating system.

Any bare metal should be prepared with a rust inhibitive primer such as PC-125 or PC-535. Commercially available rust converters can also be effective for some applications.

  • Cleanup

Acrymax coatings are waterborne coatings that feature easy water clean-up if done before the coatings dry. After the coatings dry, they will be difficult to remove from most surfaces.

  • Installation

Acrymax are waterborne coatings that can easily be applied by brush, roller, or spray. They clean up easily with water.

Keep in mind that roofing work entails some inherent dangers. All proper safety procedures, including fall protection, must be observed. Professional applicators should be employed when steep slopes, heights, or other particulars of the job require it. Building owners should verify before contracting with anyone that all appropriate and required insurance including workmen's compensation is in force and that any necessary permits have been obtained. A list of applicators that have applied Acrymax is available from Preservation Products.

  • Preparation

Removing all existing paint & coatings is generally the best method of preparation. At a minimum, loose, cracked or chipping paint must be removed.

Also be sure to use proper protective equipment when removing paint. It is possible when working on historic metal roofs that lead based paint will be encountered. All regulations and safety procedures concerning lead-based paint must be observed. The Department of Interior has published Preservation Brief #37 - Appropriate Methods for Reducing Lead Paint Hazards in Historic Housing which contains helpful information on addressing the problem of lead based paint on historic structures. The Environmental Protection Agency also recently issued the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule which is aimed at preventing lead poisoning. Homeowners, and contractors especially, should familiarize themselves with these briefs and rules of law.

  • Installation

Yes, Acrymax coatings can be applied over asphalt flat roofs. If the roof is in good condition, 2 coats of Acrymax will protect the roof from UV degradation. If the roof is leaking or is in poor condition then a fully reinforced membrane system using Poly-1 Fabric should be used. On asphalt shingles, Acrymax coatings can extend the life of the shingles if the coatings are applied before the shingles become brittle or the edges curl.

  • Installation

Absolutely. Acrymax is being used successfully over substrates that include asphalt built-up, modified bitumen, shingles, transite, aluminum, wood, concrete, masonry, slate, and other common building substrates. Roofs, decks, window sills, stucco and masonry walls are among the components of the building envelope that have been weatherproofed and protected by Acrymax coating systems. Wherever a waterproof, flexible, and durable membrane is required Acrymax is usually the most effective answer.
